Raven Bowl Preston Singletary (Tlingit), like Tony Jojola, has adapted a variety of stylistic influences to create his stunning signature glass vessels: stylized Italian classical forms, Scandinavian design sensibilities, American color and Tlingit graphic designs. To make his hat-form vessels, Singletary took the shape of the coastal tribe's woven cedar bark rain hat and inverted it. He then used stenciling and sandblasting to apply traditional Tlingit designs on the outer surfaces. "I'm hoping to bring Tlingit designs into the future," he says. "Glass is so permanent. It will never rot away like a piece of wood." Singletary has been fortunate to work with many of the top contemporary glass artists from around the world: Lino Tagliapietra, Dan Dailey, Doris Brand, Benjamin Moore, Dante Marioni, Stanislav Labinsky and Cecco Ongaro, among others, at the Pilchuck Glass School in Seattle, Washington. In addition, he has worked with glass artists in Sweden, Italy and Finland.
